Tantrix: the problem

I've discovered Tantrix a year ago.
This is a game with hexagonal tiles with 3 bands on each tile. The 3 bands are of different colors and round shape and go from one side to the either the next side, 2nd next side or opposite side...

The game I got was just with 10 tiles and the goal is to make loops the Tantrix way.
I've always thought that I could crack the math of this problems - and even program it...
But today, I found that Tantrix has a lot of presence on the web - and in different flavors than I knew.

Just go check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tantrix for example, and if you want to play, get to the Shockwave site.

So, my challenge is to write a mathematical definition of the Tantrix tiles, chains and loops...
then from this, maybe, I can write a program that solves the Tantrix "Discovery" challenges... not a new thing, but the algorithm doesn't seem to have been published ? Gulp !! This has been tried before... and not with great success...

Let's see where that gets me ...
